Mortar Fleece - Protecting the architect's vision
March 2007
TDP, the specialist in fibre technology, is calling upon architects to specify Mortar Fleece for brick and block construction projects to avoid unsightly damage to expensive building materials and protect the aesthetic appeal of the finished project.

Mortar Fleece is the first solution to be specifically designed to protect mortar and newly-laid brickwork against frost, heavy rain and strong sunlight. Simple yet highly-effective, Mortar Fleece acts as a barrier against inclement weather, allowing optimum drying conditions for the mortar which eliminates the risk of damaged brickwork, reduces downtime on site and cuts the cost of replacement materials. This innovative patented development looks set to offer substantial savings for the building industry.

TDP believes that for an architect's vision to be realised effectively the selection of the right products is critical, but that protecting these materials during the construction process is equally important. Rob Barlow, managing director of TDP explains, "To avoid damage to expensive materials such as lime mortar and reduce unnecessary costs, we would urge architects to specify Mortar Fleece, and in fact to give this simple protective measure equal importance to the building materials whenever planning brick and block schemes."

"Previously, costly materials have been left unprotected or builders have had to improvise with materials lying around the site which was unsightly and ineffective. Mortar Fleece provides a simple and cost-effective solution to this age-old construction problem."

"Industry response to Mortar Fleece has been extremely positive with Ibstock Brick already recommending it as Best Practice and we are also in discussions with a leading lime mortar manufacturer. Indications are that it will soon be accepted as an industry standard."

Mortar Fleece has also been given the backing of CERAM Building Technology, the leading building and materials technology specialist based in Stoke-on-Trent.

In a series of tests at CERAM, results have shown that Mortar Fleece provides significant protection against frost, particularly in the critical first three hours of curing, and prevents walls from drying out in hot and windy weather conditions, thus preserving the long-term strength and durability of the brickwork. In heavy rainfall Mortar Fleece offers a 93% reduction in the uptake of water, therefore keeping brickwork dry and avoiding associated lime leaching, and it also prevents efflorescence and the general ingress of water into brickwork and cavities.

Dr Andrew Smith, materials group manager at CERAM Building Technology said "The use of Mortar Fleece, in all the conditions tested as part of this investigation, shows that there is a distinct benefit over the lack of protection commonly found on UK building sites. Mortar Fleece offers protection and ease of use in the majority of weather conditions experienced in the UK, and thus will minimise the intrinsic defects that result from frost damage, saturation of the brickwork and cavity fill, and the reduction in mortar strength resulting from a loss of moisture from the mortar due to warm, dry and windy conditions."
