Case Study Netpave 50:
Bexhill-Hastings - Connect2
Pedestrian and Cycle Route

Sustrans’ Connect2 is a UK-wide project that will transform local travel in communities, creating new bridges and crossings to overcome busy roads, rivers and railways, and linking these to networks of walking and cycling routes, making it easier for millions of people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys.
 
This new seafront path, which is 2.2km in length and links two existing traffic-free paths – Galley Hill in Bexhill and Hastings promenade creates a traffic-free route that is more than 5km long.
 
This new link is part of Sustrans’ national Connect2 project, which is extending the charity’s National Cycle Network into the heart of communities across the UK, allowing people to make more of their everyday journeys on foot or by bike. The project was awarded £50 million by the Big Lottery Fund following a public vote in 2007 and part of this grant was used to fund the path, alongside funding from East Sussex County Council. The County Council has been working in partnership with Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council to deliver the scheme.
 
After considering many options, the designers, East Sussex Highways, selected TDP Netpave 50 as the preferred surfacing solution. This decision was based upon the previous successful use of Netpave on other Sustrans schemes and the unique flexibility of the system.
 
Another factor which contributed to the specification of the Netpave system was its inherent robustness and ability to perform with a low quality cell infill material. This facilitated the extensive re-use of existing material which had a significant impact on the financial viability of the project. This re-use also enhanced the environmental credentials of the project by negating the requirement to import large quantities of quarried stone.
 
The Bexhill to Hastings Pedestrian and Cycle route now forms a key missing link in the National Cycle Network Route 2 (NCN2), running along the south coast of England. This is an attractive addition to the network as it will be one of the few sections where you can ride so close to the sea but away from traffic.
